ABOUT US

Our history:

Metro Dog was founded in 2004 by Alison Smith of Canine Culture and Diane Livoti of Dog Tired! Pet Service, who saw the need for a holistic pet care center in the East Bay. Canine Culture and Dog Tired! merged to form Metro Dog.

After two years of searching for a location, we found the perfect venue at 3117 Pierce Street, located conveniently close to the Central Avenue exits of I-80 and I-580 in Richmond, California. We’re just half a mile from Point Isabel and the Albany Bulb! (see a map)

We aim to serve the pet care and educational needs of the entire Bay Area, with full boarding, day care, dog walking, pet sitting, and training services.  We also boast onsite Pawsh, a one-stop shop for all your pet’s necessities and accessories, and Spruce, our in-house green grooming salon.

We look forward to serving you and your four-pawed family member!

About the building:

Metro Dog has 17,000 square feet of usable space. We are housed within a spacious 12,500 square foot warehouse with vaulted redwood ceilings and twelve skylights to let the sunshine in. We offer seven play yards: two are outdoors (2,500 sq ft) for romping on sunny days, and five are indoors completely covered with rubber flooring.

We have used NON-TOXIC, GREEN and SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE building materials throughout the Center to ensure good health for you, your pet, and our planet.

We have easy curb-side drop off and are within minutes of the El Cerrito Plaza Bart station and a stone’s throw from the casual carpool.

Our philosophy:

At Metro Dog, we believe in changing the world for the better, one dog at a time!

We have taken our cue from the Buddhist Metta Meditation practice. Our mantra is:

May all beings be safe.
May all beings be happy.
May all beings be healthy.
May all beings live with ease.

These are our values:

GREEN PET CARE:
Metro Dog believes in taking care of our environment. This translates into better care for your pet, too! Our Center is on a filtered water system, delivering pure clean water to your pet 24 hours a day. Dogs spend their days in the fresh air.

We only buy green products for use in the Center, and use recycled materials and soy inks for all of our correspondence with you. Our construction materials are sustainable, non-polluting, and whenever possible, purchased from a reuse company.

SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
At Metro Dog, we also understand that taking care of our world doesn’t stop with the natural environment.

We believe in supporting sustainability and fair trade both locally and globally. We buy products that are fair trade, as well as supporting local businesses and artisans. We purchase green products and actively contribute to decreasing landfill contributions through reuse. We appreciate and encourage our customers to share their knowledge of product makers that you think we should carry in our store.

ANIMALS FIRST:
Here at Metro Dog, we are all about your dog (and soon, cat)! Everything about Metro Dog and Metro Cat is designed with canine and feline comfort and safety foremost in mind. We provide 24 hour supervision to ensure that your pet’s needs and safety are tended to at all times. Flooring is made of recycled rubber to reduce impact upon your pet’s bones. Visual barriers around play areas are designed to prevent over stimulation and generate security.

All of our housing units are supplied with filtered water. Our building has great ventilation and fresh air is circulated continuously with enormous fans. We are heated through overhead radiant that is has the highest energy efficiency rating available.

Our guests’ days are structured around the animals’ behavioral needs, NOT around human convenience. We provide separate, spacious areas for dogs with different needs:

ACTIVE ADULT DOGS live in The Neighborhood, with access to four large play areas (two indoor, two outdoor.)

SMALL DOGS live in our Small Dog Town, with their own personal miniature version of the Painted Ladies and Alamo Square to romp in, undisturbed by the big guys! In addition to their specialized small dog play yard, the “Littles” spend their day between our four other play yards in their Petite Posse.

TWEENIES even get their own play group! Not too big, not too little.... just right!

PUPPIES live in the Canine Kindergarten, which features a spacious, toy-filled romper room for puppies only. Soft floors provide traction for playtime and padding for growing bones. Puppies are on a regular house breaking schedule and have regular nap times.

OLDER DOGS lounge around the Old Hound Lounge, where the old timers can relax and take it easy, in addition to spending a portion of their day in our different play yards.

SPECIAL NEEDS DOGS: Metro Dog is equipped to board pets with special medical and/or behavioral needs. In their own soothing, low-stimulus area, special needs dogs get the attention and the quiet they need.

CATS! Metro Dog is not just for dogs! Coming in 2008, we will be home to Metro Cat, a cluster of cozy feline apartments nestled well out of the canine fray. Quiet and secluded, in the Kitty Kingdom is purrfect for cats.
